Some people wonder, “Did Jesus ever claim to be God?”  This is a fair question.  Below is a compilation of statements made that indicate that Jesus is the Second Person of the Triune God.  I have not included any acts of miracles, healings, or the Resurrection to show that Jesus is God, but just the words He used to describe Himself and His authority.

 

 

The Gospel of Matthew

“See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name Him Immanuel, which is translated ‘God with us.’” Matt. 1:23

“And there came a voice from heaven:  This is My beloved Son, I take delight in Him!”  Matt. 3:17

​

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven.  On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name?’  Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you!  Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!’”  Matt. 7:21-23

“But so you may know the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He told the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your stretcher and go home.”  Matt. 9:6

“Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge Me before men, I will also acknowledge him before My Father in heaven.  But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny before My Father in heaven.”  Matt. 10:32-33

“For the Son of Man is going to come with His angels in the glory of His Father, and then He will reward each according to what he has done.”  Matt. 16:27

“While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said:  “This is My beloved Son.  I take delight in Him.  Listen to Him!”  Matt. 17:5

“Again, I assure you:  If two of you on earth agree about any matter that you pray for, it will be done for you by My Father in heaven.  For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there among them.”  Matt. 18:19-20

“Jesus said to them, ‘I assure you:  In the Messianic Age, when the Son of Man sits on His glorious throne, you who have followed Me will also sit on 12 thrones, judging the 12 tribes of Israel.’”  Matt. 19:28

“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.  All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.’”  Matt. 25:31-34

“Then He took a cup, and after giving thanks, He gave it to them and said, ‘Drink from it, all of you.  For this is My blood that establishes the covenant; it is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.’”  Matt. 26:27-28

“Then the high priest said to Him, ‘By the living God I place you under oath:  tell us if You are the Messiah, the Son of God!’  ‘You have said it,’ Jesus told him.  ‘But I tell you, in the future you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.’”  Matt. 26:63-64

“Then Jesus came near and said to them, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you.   And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’”  Matt. 28:18-20

 

The Gospel of Mark

“Seeing their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.’  But some of the scribes were sitting there, thinking to themselves: ‘Why does He speak like this?  He’s blaspheming!  Who can forgive sins but God alone?’  ...[Jesus said to them:]  “But so you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He told the paralytic, “I tell you:  get up, pick up your stretcher, and go home.”  Mark 2:7-11

“Therefore the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”  Mark 2:28.

“Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.  He will send out His angels and gather His elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.”  Mark 13:26-27

 

[The high priest questioned Jesus:]  “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”  “I am,” said Jesus, “and all of you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”  Mark 14:61-62

 

The Gospel of Luke

“But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people:  today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David.”  Luke 2:10-11.

And a voice came from heaven:  You are My beloved Son.  I take delight in You!”  Luke 3:22

Seeing their faith He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.”  Luke 5:20

“The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” Luke 6:5

They said, “If You are the Messiah, tell us.”  But He said to them, “If I do tell you, you will not believe.  And if I ask you, you will not answer.  But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the Power of God. “They all asked, “Are You, then, the Son of God?”  And He said to them, “You say that I am.”  Luke 22:67-71

So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”  He answered him, “You have said it.”  Luke 23:3

 

The Gospel of John

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  John 1:1
